How spine width is calculated

Every sheet (leaf) carries two pages, so spine width = (pages ÷ 2) × caliper per leaf. A 200-page book on 0.1 mm paper has a 10 mm spine. Add a little for the cover stock and glue if your printer doesn't already include it.

Caliper varies a lot between papers of the same weight, so use the printer's own caliper figure, or their spine calculator, for the final cover file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate book spine width?

Divide the page count by two and multiply by the paper thickness per leaf. For example, 300 pages ÷ 2 × 0.1 mm = 15 mm.

What is paper caliper?

Caliper is the thickness of one sheet, usually given in mm, microns or points (thousandths of an inch).
