Bleed, trim and safe area explained

  • Trim size is the finished size after cutting.
  • Bleed is extra artwork beyond the trim, usually 3 mm (0.125 in) per side, so a slightly off cut doesn't leave a white edge.
  • Safe area is the zone inside the trim, typically 3–6 mm in, where important text and logos should stay.

Example: an A4 flyer (210 × 297 mm) with 3 mm bleed is set up at 216 × 303 mm, with a safe area of 198 × 285 mm at a 6 mm margin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard bleed size?

Most printers ask for 3 mm (about 0.125 inch) of bleed on each side. Some large-format and book printers want more, so check their spec.

How big should the safe margin be?

Keep text and logos at least 3–6 mm (0.125–0.25 in) inside the trim line.
