How stitch count is estimated
Stitch count depends mostly on how much of the design area is filled with stitches. The estimator multiplies design area (square inches) by a stitch density for the complexity you choose, from about 600 stitches per square inch for simple outlines to 2,800 for dense fills, then scales it by coverage. Upload a logo and it measures coverage directly from the non-white pixels.
A real stitch count comes from the digitized file, but an estimate is usually close enough to quote, and much faster than waiting on a digitizer.
Typical stitch counts
| Design | Typical size | Approx. stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Simple left chest text | 3.5 × 1 in | 2,000–4,000 |
| Left chest logo | 3.5 × 3.5 in | 5,000–9,000 |
| Cap front logo | 4 × 2.25 in | 5,000–8,000 |
| Full back | 10 × 10 in | 30,000–60,000+ |
Pricing embroidery by stitch count
Many shops price per 1,000 stitches with a minimum, and charge a one-time digitizing fee that also scales with stitch count. Run time matters too: at a few hundred stitches per minute per head, a 10,000-stitch logo ties up a head for well over ten minutes per piece, plus hooping and trimming.
